Tepid Reception for Device as a (Subscription) Service Among U.S. Consumers

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight presents the results of IDC's ConsumerScape 360 Subscription Service Survey. According to the survey, U.S. subscribers show only modest enthusiasm for consumer devices such as smartphones, PCs, and TVs as subscription offerings. It seems that the broader device-as-a-subscription-service market needs greater socialization. Apple's Upgrade Program (which bundles AppleCare+) stands out in the smartphone market for its high profile, though Samsung and others also have offerings. We expect broader consumer acceptance to grow as these smartphone lease/upgrade programs gain increasing adoption, raising the bar of familiarity and acceptance for other categories.
