This IDC study presents an update to the Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Forecast, 2018–2022 (IDC #US43766218, May 2018). The worldwide HDD forecast update integrates IDC's current IT hardware and consumer electronics products forecasts through 2022 as well as updated HDD and solid state drive (SSD) technology transition assumptions. This forecast also reflects updated HDD and SSD attach rate assumptions in systems, particularly where the mass storage device is fungible in the system or device.
Underpinning the worldwide HDD forecast update are IDC's assumptions regarding HDD technology transitions that will affect the pace of HDD areal density growth (see Worldwide Hard Disk Drive Component Forecast, 2018–2022, IDC #US44220618, August 2018), HDD product transitions, and HDD price-per-gigabyte declines for each HDD product segment.
"Rapid and unexpected changes in HDD petabyte demand from cloud service provider customers is a dynamic that can affect the enterprise HDD unit and petabyte shipment, and revenue forecast significantly in the short term," according to John Rydning, research vice president for Hard Disk Drives. "In the long term, the trend is clear: the enterprise market will continue to drive HDD petabyte shipment growth and sustain annual HDD industry revenue at or near current levels."
