IDC Market Glance: PaaS Software, 1Q19

By: Larry CarvalhoResearch Director, Platform as a Service

On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Market Glance for platform-as-a-service (PaaS) software breaks down individual components of the ecosystem while identifying various entities participating in each segment.

The PaaS software has been constantly changing since its inception taking advantage of new cloud technologies and capabilities to meet enterprise application development challenges. PaaS offerings are now building in full automation of the development life cycle while building in integration and data management capabilities to combine value from diverse systems and handle the exponential data growth, respectively. These application requirements need highly scalable and flexible infrastructure leading to new software tools to abstract and optimize the underlying compute, storage, and network resources. Container adoption and the serverless approach are changing developer preferences in their choice of application architectures. This 2019 update removes the open source initiatives that are covered elsewhere in IDC research and adds a new cloud-native CI/CD approach to accelerating application development and deployment.
