This IDC Survey summarizes findings from IDC's 3Q19 U.S. Gamer Survey as it relates to PC, game console, and smartphone/tablet gamers' use of four popular gameplay video and livestreaming apps or websites: YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Gaming, and Mixer. Major sections include gameplay video viewer, creator and nonviewer demographics; gameplay video viewing rates by major app/site and hardware platform; and gameplay video viewer hardware setups and behaviors. Across all platforms, the gameplay video viewer base totaled about 4,200.
"While eSports gets a lot coverage in the press, it appears that about twice as many Americans watched a gameplay video or livestream in 3Q19 than watched an eSports video or a livestream. The survey also showed at least 5.7 million Americans made a livestream or gameplay clip on a PC, console, or mobile device last year and, not surprisingly, that these content creators gravitated toward premium hardware and had a much clearer understanding of their household internet speeds than the typical gamer." — Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming and VR/AR
