Worldwide Server Forecast, 2020–2024: COVID-19 Slowdown

By: Kuba StolarskiResearch Director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group

Abstract

This IDC study provides historical data (2015–2019) and forecast data (2020–2024) for the worldwide server market. The forecast and historical data illustrate IT buyer consumption of server hardware segmented by product, CPU type, server class, socket capability, and primary operating system. For each of these categories, IDC has estimated value (end-user spending) and units.

"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, what was previously expected to be a mild correction may become a more severe market downturn," said Kuba Stolarski, research director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies at IDC. "While many enterprise IT buyers may delay nonessential projects and purchases, business continuity needs will drive investment in customers' own datacenters as well as in public cloud-based services. While it is unclear what the post-pandemic recovery will look like and when it will begin, once the market weathers this storm, there will be a renewed focus on resilience and agility in IT infrastructure operations, and market participants will once again be asking questions about how fast the market will adopt new cloud services, edge infrastructure, and 5G."
