This IDC Survey reviews data collected in late 2018 in which we polled 301 consumer smartwatch owners on what features — enabled by a cellular connection — on their smartwatch.
"The market for cellular-enabled smartwatches goes back several years, but it wasn't until Apple's Series 3 Watch that consumer awareness began to generate, and services and use cases became available," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director for IDC's wearables team. "Given this short history, the number of experiences that leverage the cellular connection has been limited, leaving it to carriers and smartwatch vendors alike to determine how the connection should be leveraged."
"According to our survey, users want their smartwatches to behave like their smartphones, capable of making and receiving phone calls and texts. Smartwatch and platform OEMs would do well to make this experience as easy and as intuitive as possible, given the UI differences between smartwatches and smartphones. Also receiving interest was GPS, which could lead to other experiences and revenue streams. Beyond them were a list of other features that finished lower but have yet to reach the market. This gives OEMs some space to experiment before launching."
