TECH SUPPLIER Feb 2019 - Market Perspective - Doc # US44806619

CES 2019 Ushers in an Incremental Tech New Year, 5G Hype, Uneven Consumer IoT Progress, and a Cameo from Cupertino

By: John Jackson

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective reflects select demand-side research from IDC's ConsumerScape 360 Surveys on key themes evident at CES 2019. CES remains a landmark, theme-setting event in technology, showcasing an expansive range of innovations and developments that defies comprehensive coverage. It is instructive to reflect relevant primary research from the consumer demand side on key themes and announcements, however, to provide insights into which products, services, and initiatives are likely to gain traction, which are not, and where investment should flow in the medium term.

"CES 2019 saw largely incremental iteration targeting established investment areas such as the connected home," said John Jackson, research VP for Consumer Technologies and Services at IDC. "Our research strongly corroborates these initiatives, showing high and growing rates of engagement with computing devices and entertainment services at home," he continued. "There will be winners, but not winners taking all. We also note work left to be done in the connected home space in communicating value to consumers in a way that meaningfully converts interest to intent and adoption."
