TECH BUYER Feb 2019 - IDC Perspective - Doc # US44836319

The Next Frontier for the Mainframe

By: Peter RuttenResearch Director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group

Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses the future of IBM Z beyond the next two IBM Z generations. IBM is investing heavily in IBM Z, not only in the generation after today's z14 but also in technologies beyond the next two IBM Z generations. The goals are ambitious and address important issues: how to achieve impenetrable security, how to keep increasing hardware performance beyond the host processor, how to achieve a seamless multicloud environment, and how to make IBM Z increasingly easy to use and, potentially, autonomous. IDC thinks it is not inconceivable that at some point in the future, an IBM Z can be nearly autonomous, even as IBM is not yet ready to go that far.

"Current and future users of IBM Z can be assured that the IBM Z platform will continue to be advanced with groundbreaking technologies while remaining true to its core mission," said Peter Rutten, research manager at IDC's Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies group. "IBM is investing in all the right areas to address IT's future challenges and opportunities."
