Abstract

This IDC study describes the IDC MaturityScape for data excellence, a framework for identifying the stages, critical measures, outcomes, and actions required for IT organizations to effectively evolve to the data excellence as a critical enabler of the digital transformation of their enterprise. This study enables business and technology executives to identify areas in need of enhancement in support of digital transformation in five key areas or disciplines of information transformation. The IDC MaturityScape for data excellence enables an organization to assess its competency and maturity and use a baseline in defining short-term and long-term goals and plans for improvements. It also enables executives to prioritize and obtain guidance in leveraging and managing what is potentially their fastest-growing asset: the data asset. With this document, an organization can use a comprehensive set of objective criteria to benchmark its maturity against an industry benchmark — in the quest to achieve facts-based and data-driven decision making and derive desired outcomes based on business-oriented organizational goals.

"While learning varies between human learning from information and machines learning from data, the management of valuable knowledge and insights — "learning" — is increasingly becoming a compound process with close human-machine collaboration," says Serge Findling, vice president of research with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "Leaders in data excellence must treat data and information like any other asset, invest in a range of technology and people to distill insight into monetary value, and invest in organizational capabilities focused on leveraging data."
