Abstract

This IDC Survey provides results and analysis of key findings from IDC's December 2018 ConsumerScape 360: Emerging Technology and Video Survey with a focus on consumer behaviors that will likely impact the future of online or over-the-top (OTT) video. This IDC Survey aims to help content and technology suppliers better understand and compete in the market for video and media services at a time of radical change in demand patterns as well as supply-side cost and market structures. Video has become a strategic battleground among traditional and new content providers and distributors as competition and technology redefine the nature of consumer demand.

The results are presented for the following topics: importance of screen size, impact of mobile data plans, interest in emerging video experiences and higher video and audio quality, and importance of various video service features such as bundling options, user interfaces, content choice, and price. Results are presented for the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Japan, South Korea, and Mexico.

"Consumers continue to value video viewing on the largest available screens and demand high-quality video experiences," says Greg Ireland, research director for IDC's Multiscreen Video program. "Looking forward, video service cost will be a key consideration for consumers as they evaluate services and mobile data plans remain a notable barrier to increased use of streaming video services."
