BizOps: The CIO's Guide to Multiplied Business Transformation

By: Marc StrohleinAdjunct Research Advisor, Joseph C. PucciarelliGroup Vice President & IT Executive Advisor, Mike RosenAdjunct Research Advisor

Abstract

This IDC Perspective helps CIOs understand what BizOps teams are, what needs and problems they solve, and their key attributes and activities and the roles the CIO should play in initiating, supporting, or using BizOps. Enterprise digital transformation challenges large, traditional enterprises as it requires them to move quickly, overcome departmental boundaries, and work in new and different ways — and it's impossible to wait for gradual change over time. BizOps has been an effective strategy for digital disruptors like Amazon, LinkedIn, and Google. Now, CIOs in traditional enterprises should explore the use of BizOps teams to speed execution, act as catalysts for change, and build organizational digital capabilities.

"BizOps teams are usually deployed to optimize processes and operations, drive strategic initiatives like digital transformation, or answer strategic questions: the why, what, how, and when of any major new enterprise undertaking," says Marc Strohlein, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "They function as internal consultants and can effectively work within, in parallel to, and outside company organizational structures."
