This IDC Market Presentation provides an overview of IDC's segmentation and growth expectations for public cloud stacks on infrastructure hardware that runs outside the public cloud datacenters. IDC expects these new deployment models to see rapid adoption over the next five years and to grow to represent a significant portion of the enterprise installed base of servers.
The growth and success of public cloud platforms has resulted in a growing preference to use public cloud consistent stacks for both on- and off-premises needs. This is driven by enterprises' need to keep certain applications and data on-premises as well as a growing desire to build consistency across organizations' on- and off-premises IT infrastructure. Public cloud providers have responded to this with a variety of offerings — ranging from integrated hardware appliances to flexible software distributions. Public cloud providers now see these on-premises public cloud stack environments as an opportunity to extend service delivery to a broader set of customer needs and to become the platform of choice across customer infrastructure footprints.
