This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights different approaches taken by enterprises to refactor existing applications from a user survey. Cloud adoption paths taken by customers show that cloud-native technologies are playing a leading role in defining the underlying application architectures. Containers and serverless technologies are defining the path for monolithic applications to be re-architected in a way to take advantage of infrastructure efficiencies and dissecting traditional application workloads into microservices. "After lift and shift step to take advantage of a multitenant public infrastructure, containers and microservices are bringing the next level of cloud benefits," said Larry Carvalho, research director, Platform as a Service, IDC. "This Survey Spotlight illustrates that cloud-native choices are preferred by customers while re-architecting their applications to take advantage of the modern cloud architecture."
