This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights distribution of spending by type of service on platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solutions by users surveyed. Public cloud vendors have made it very simple to build an application development environment from a wide range of individual services, and customers are gravitating to picking appropriate services, giving developers increased flexibility. Choices vary between organizations, with start-ups leading the way to picking services that meet their application needs at the lowest cost. "Public cloud platform adoption began with opinionated and bundled offerings delivering high value to customers with minimal expertise," said Larry Carvalho, research director, Platform as a Service, IDC. "This survey points to customers now leaning toward picking individual services that communicate with each other through application program interfaces (APIs) and can be refined based on application requirements."
