Worldwide Smartphone Forecast, 2019–2023

By: Anthony ScarsellaResearch Manager, Mobile Phones, William StofegaProgram Director, Mobile Device Technology and Trends

This IDC study presents the updated five-year forecast for smartphone shipments worldwide by operating system. The worldwide smartphone market will reach a total of 1.39 billion units shipped in 2019, down 0.8% from the 1.41 billion units shipped in 2018. From there, shipments will reach 1.54 billion units in 2023, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 1.9%.

"The 2018 holiday quarter was one to forget as shipments fell for both Apple and Android alike," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "The 4.1% decline in 2018 has been an eye-opener to the market as it signals the biggest decline we have witnessed since the arrival of the modern-day smartphone. The lack of growth impacted many major markets such as China (-10.5%) and the United States (-7.1%), which both felt the wrath of refresh cycles that continue to lengthen combined with record-setting ASPs. However, not all is bleak. The outlook for 2020 looks slightly more promising as we expect 2.9% growth fueled by 3.1% growth from Android and 2.0% from Apple. Increased 5G deployments along with Apple joining the 5G party could set the upgrades in motion as both carriers and vendors start to transition their portfolios and their customer base to support a 5G future."
