The Future of Technology Sourcing and Procurement — Part 3: Addressing the Technology Sourcing Competency Gap

By: Dr. Ron BabinAdjunct Research Advisor, Aaron PolikaitisVice President of Research, Vendor Sourcing and Management

Abstract

This IDC Perspective identifies key practical considerations for procurement organizations looking to upgrade their sourcing effectiveness with respect to 3rd Platform technologies. After years of rushing to move applications to the cloud, many enterprises are taking a hard look at the contractual agreements under which their applications are hosted in the cloud. Some have determined that suboptimal contractual terms may have resulted from 3rd Platform technology sourcing competency gaps.

According to Aaron Polikaitis, VP of research at IDC IT Executive Programs (IEP), "IT and LOB groups understand new technologies and are becoming more comfortable interacting with vendors on business and sourcing related matters. Unfortunately, procurement organizations formally chartered with the responsibility for sourcing emerging technologies are behind in the learning curve and must close this competency gap in order to drive value for their enterprises."
