Looking Back at NRF and the New Infrastructures on Show: Edge Computing and 5G

By: Robert EastmanResearch Manager

Abstract

This IDC Perspective presents a deep dive into the predominant retail infrastructure themes from the National Retail Federation (NRF) Big Show 2019 event held January 13–15 at Jacob Javits in New York City. Our conversations, meetings, and briefings over three days highlighted a new focus on retail infrastructure as retailers are embracing digital transformation (DX) and having to adapt their infrastructures to better manage heavier, more variable workloads in environments that often include hybrid clouds and multiclouds.

"There was a heavier focus on retail infrastructure at this year's NRF, reflecting a realization on the part of retailers that retail infrastructure can no longer be 'out of sight and out of mind.' Digital transformation requires a solid foundation, and as retailers look to new technologies to deliver better experiences to their customers, they are realizing that legacy technologies compromise this mission, whether in the infrastructure or in other parts of the enterprise. There is a breathtaking amount of innovation in retail infrastructure for retailers to take advantage of," said Robert Eastman, research manager, IDC Retail Insights.
