U.S. Consumer Landline Voice Services Forecast, 2019–2023

By: Amy LindResearch Manager, Broadband, Enterprise Voice & IP Communications Services, and Unified Communications

Abstract

This IDC study forecasts the market for consumer wireline voice communications in the United States over a five-year period ending in 2023. This study provides subscriber and revenue forecasts for landline voice services. It also examines key trends impacting the consumer voice market including wireline displacement and new, disruptive OTT VoIP services.

"Traditional landline consumer voice services continue to shrink as consumers replace their home phone with wireless phones and OTT VoIP services such as magicJack, Skype, and Ooma. The telcos continue to post significant landline voice losses while many cable operators also have posted negative new subscriber additions. IDC forecasts that nearly 58 million U.S. consumers still had a landline home phone at the end of 2018, indicating that many consumers still value their landline home phone and are not likely to cut the cord." — Amy Lind, research manager, United States Consumer Multiplay and Broadband Services
