The GDC That Wasn't: Game Development Adjusts to the COVID-19 Tsunami

By: Lewis WardResearch Director, Gaming and VR/AR

Abstract

This IDC Market Note assesses the state of video game development in the wake of the cancellation of 2020's Game Developer's Conference, which was slated to take place in San Francisco in mid-March, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Even though GDC 2020 was cancelled, game development worldwide goes on as the market adjusts to new realities imposed on hardware manufacturers, game developers/publishers, and other key supply chain stakeholders. Many more industry events are likely to be cancelled or moved online as a result of COVID-19, and development studios and related vendors need to get more creative, remain flexible, and develop a plan to retain this resiliency 'muscle' after the pandemic is over because it's likely another pandemic will happen." — Lewis Ward, research director of Gaming and VR/AR
