Worldwide DevOps Software Tools Forecast, 2020–2024

By: Jim MercerResearch Director, DevOps & DevSecOps, Mary Johnston TurnerResearch Vice President, Future of Digital Infrastructure

This IDC study provides an updated market forecast for 2020–2024 based on June 2020 conditions as described in IDC's Black Book Live Edition: June 2020. It also reflects updates made to the IDC Software Tracker in spring 2020. IDC's estimates for worldwide DevOps software tools growth rates in 2020 and 2021 have been significantly reduced, although they still show positive single-digit growth. A somewhat stronger recovery will take place in 2022 and 2023, although ongoing trends related to market consolidation, open source, and infrastructure automation becoming more embedded in cloud infrastructure services will all impact longer-term growth trends.

According to Jim Mercer, research director, DevOps, IDC, "The worldwide DevOps software tools market saw strong double-digit growth in 2019, with worldwide revenue totaling $8.5 billion, but the forecast for 2020–2024 is being heavily impacted by the current global economic slowdown. IDC believes enterprise DevOps teams are maturing and looking to reduce complexity by adopting more standardized toolchains and workflows and pivoting toward cloud services that embed basic infrastructure automation. Market consolidation is also taking place, and customers seeking to reduce spending are giving unpaid open source options hard looks. The impact of this trend is likely to add pressure on the market in 2020 as vendors and enterprise customers deal with the worldwide economic slowdown."
