Worldwide Smartphone Forecast Update, 2019–2023

By: Anthony ScarsellaResearch Manager, Mobile Phones, William StofegaProgram Director, Mobile Device Technology and Trends

Abstract

This IDC study presents the updated five-year forecast for smartphone shipments worldwide by operating system. The worldwide smartphone market will reach a total of 1.38 billion units shipped in 2019, down 1.9% from the 1.40 billion units shipped in 2018. From there, shipments will reach 1.52 billion units in 2023, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 1.6%.

"Despite the numerous flagships already launched in the first quarter, these high-profile handsets have little impact in turning the market around in 2019," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "The drop in 2019 will mark the third consecutive year of contraction driven by highly saturated markets in developed countries and slower churn in some developing economies. However, the outlook for 2020 continues to show promise as we expect 2.8% growth fueled by 2.8% growth from Android and 3.1% from Apple. Increased 5G deployments, along with Apple securing Qualcomm as a partner, could set the upgrades in motion as both carriers and vendors start to move their subscriber base over to 5G handsets gradually."
