TECH BUYER Jul 2019 - IDC Perspective - Doc # US45331119

Whatever Happened to "Keeping the Lights On" 100% of the Time?

By: Robert EastmanResearch Manager

Abstract

This IDC Perspective addresses the June 2019 back-to-back outages at Target and provides context on what these events mean for retail infrastructure strategy and for other retailers. Leveraging key pieces of IDC data and research on retail infrastructure, this document shows how these — and other retail outages in the headlines over the past year — highlight the rising importance of retail infrastructure to digital transformation and how retailers need to respond with a renewed urgency.

Robert Eastman, research manager, IDC Retail Insights, says, "With consumers expecting that they will be able to transact with a retailer all of the time, anytime, in the stream of life, retailers and consumers alike think of outages, such as Target suffered, as unacceptable today. Retail industry pressures are driving retailers to pay more attention to their retail infrastructures. Retailers report investing, in particular, on networking infrastructure, software-defined infrastructure design, and infrastructure software in IDC's Digital Transformation Executive Sentiment Survey. Investments like these should be part of a pivot to a next-generation retail infrastructure."
