Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight looks at how engineering-oriented value chains (EOVC) companies (which include automotive manufacturers) are currently adopting, as well as planning to adopt, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies within the next 12 months. IDC recently completed its 2019 Product and Service Innovation Survey to determine the current and future plans for manufacturers in the areas of product design, development, manufacturing, and service. IDC reviewed the results at an overall level and also segmented the analysis by four industry value chains, which are defined as follows:

  • Asset-oriented value chains (AOVC): Chemical, energy, pulp, and paper
  • Brand-oriented value chains (BOVC): Retail, consumer products, and apparel and footwear
  • Engineering-oriented value chains (EOVC): Automotive, A&D, and machinery
  • Technology-oriented value chains (TOVC): High tech, consumer electronics, and semi-conductor

The respondents of the survey indicate that their appetite for 3rd Platform technology is large and growing; this includes tech such as cloud, mobile, big data and analytics, IoT, AR/VR, cognitive systems, blockchain, 3D printing, and advanced security. They know how these emerging tools will help ease the burden of increasing customer demand only satisfied via reduced cycle times across all areas of design, development, engineering, manufacturing, and life-cycle services. This adoption also supports why their need to move to digital engineering, manufacturing, and connected customer experiences is so critical — and thus the need for 3rd Platform technologies. Not necessarily surprising, EOVC manufacturers are investing in and counting on AI and ML. More enlightening, however, is the breadth of how they plan to use these tools to drive improvement including design, engineering, and service.

The top 5 areas of focus for EOVC companies with AI and ML are:

  • Product ideation and design
  • Better service planning and execution
  • Product portfolio optimization
  • Products in service that "self-heal" or suggest preventative maintenance
  • Products in service that suggest design improvements
