IDC PlanScape: Software-Defined Automation and Robotics to Enable Digital Continuity in Operations

By: Remy GlaisnerResearch Director, John Santagate

Abstract

This IDC PlanScape explores how the digitized environment will accelerate its transformation and deliver additional value for the organization as well as its business ecosystem by exploiting the complementarity of the software-defined automation model and robotics. The document proposes an initial framework to align and apply these two components. It also offers the first steps toward a transitional road map for the adoption of the SDA-robotics functionalities for operation-intensive companies.

"Robotics has been on the hype for some time, yet proper leverage of such solutions outside of certain industries, automotive manufacturing for example, is not commonplace," said Remy Glaisner, research director, IT/OT Convergence Strategies. "From a digitally driven operational transformation (OX) standpoint, much of the recent OT solutions are digitized but designed on models, limiting their dynamic, connected usage." He added, "Broadly speaking, robotics represents a specific class of modular edge devices that suffer from being integrated within old OT archetypes. For that reason, SDA and robotics are becoming a perfect pair."
