Worldwide Relational Database Management Systems Software Forecast, 2019–2023

By: Carl W. OlofsonResearch Vice President, Data Management Software

Abstract

This IDC study presents a five-year forecast of the relational database management system (RDBMS) software market, from the historical year 2018 to 2023, with breakdowns by deployment format (on-premises/other software versus public cloud), region, and operating environment. It also includes commentary on the market and a description of the factors that drive and inhibit growth in this market.

"The trends in the RDBMS industry that are driving the market are to be found in cloud deployment (and new methods of deploying applications), the blending of analytic (OLAP) operations into transactional (OLTP) operations, resulting on analytic transaction processing (ATP) operations, support for new data types, access methods (including timeseries), and heterogenous (or multimodel) data management and advances in hardware (such as persistent memory)," said Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software research at IDC. "At the same time, competing approaches outside the relational realm, including from document and graph database products, and the revenue depressing effects of open source are inhibiting this market's growth."
