U.S. Paid Subscription Over-the-Top Video Services Forecast, 2019–2023

Abstract

This IDC study presents a forecast of paid OTT video subscription services in the United States through 2023. The dimensions covered in the forecast include total U.S. households that subscribe to at least one paid OTT service, total number of subscriptions subscribed to by these households, and the average number of subscriptions per household. Also included in this study is an analysis of key developments and market drivers and inhibitors.

"IDC estimates that the number of households that subscribed to at least one paid subscription OTT video service in the United States totaled nearly 68 million at the end of 2018," says Greg Ireland, research director, Multiscreen Video at IDC. "While Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu have been dominant to date, the market eagerly anticipates new service launches from Disney, Apple, and others. IDC expects new entrants to be instrumental in driving market growth in terms of both household penetration and the number of services subscribed to by each OTT household."
