IDC Survey Spotlight: Medical Device Security Update — Progress Is Modest

By: Lynne DunbrackResearch Vice President

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight presents key findings from IDC's 2019 Global IoT Decision Maker Survey Health regarding securing medical devices. IDC's 2019 Global IoT Decision Maker Survey of more than 4,800 organizations worldwide, spanning 29 countries across 22 industries, including healthcare and life sciences, was completed in April 2019.

"Attack surfaces are becoming increasingly borderless in a connected healthcare environment with internet-connected medical devices," stated Lynne A. Dunbrack, research vice president, IDC Health Insights. "Medical devices are notoriously vulnerable because of poor security practices and thus are at increased risk for exploitation by cybercriminals to gain access to IT systems; yet little has been done in the past five years to increase the security posture of medical devices."
