Do Improvements in Cellular, Including the Rollout of 5G, Remove the Need for DSRC or C-V2X?

By: Matt ArcaroResearch Manager, Next Generation Automotive, Jason LeighResearch Manager, Mobility

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective analyzes the role and potential of the network connection within automotive vehicle to everything or V2X. This analysis includes addressing whether cellular networks (with the availability of 5G) will be able to satisfy V2X communication requirements without the need for a specific, dedicated V2X short-range communication protocol (i.e., DSRC or C-V2X PC5).

"The speed and latency improvements increasingly made to today's cellular networks renew a question as to what their automotive capabilities and limitations are," says Jason Leigh, research manager for Mobility at IDC. "However, one area that 5G is not suited to replace is the development, deployment, and need for a dedicated short-range communication protocol for V2X."
