Abstract

This IDC study provides historical data (2015–2019) and a forecast data (2020–2024) for the worldwide service provider compute and storage infrastructure market. The forecast and historical data illustrate consumption of infrastructure hardware segmented by service provider category: hyperscaler, cloud service provider, digital service provider, communications service provider (telco), and hoster. For each of these categories, IDC has estimated the end-user spending (value) on server and storage.

"The COVID-19 pandemic is making many enterprise IT buyers to delay nonessential projects and infrastructure purchases," said Kuba Stolarski, research director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies Group at IDC. "This opens the door for some cloud services to take up the slack while saving capex in the short term for these customers. The surge in demand for collaboration and communication platforms is also resulting in an increase for service provider infrastructure expansion. Once the market recovers from COVID-19, service providers will redouble their efforts in service and geographical expansions, with a particular focus on new areas of growth like edge and 5G."
