The Smart Store Is Redefined: Smarter Operational Technology (OT) Converges with Smarter IT

By: Robert EastmanResearch Manager

Abstract

This IDC Perspective addresses the growing importance of smart operational technology (OT) to the "smart store." Success in digital transformation (DX) will increasingly have to assume a convergence of the IT and OT domains, as two contributors to the ability of the retail mission to deliver a frictionless, immersive customer experience. The arrival of IoT is intersecting with growing innovation in OT, falling prices in sensors, and energy management and sustainability trends to create pressing opportunities to smarter building automation.

Robert Eastman, research manager, IDC Retail Insights, says, "It is time for retailers to define the 'smart store' more broadly to include the OT domain. There are many exciting things happening in smart buildings that open up tremendous opportunities for retailers to create better customer experiences while operating more efficiently."
