Abstract

This IDC Market Analysis Perspective (MAP) provides a high-level view of the video game industry in 2020 and projects several key market segments through 2024. Total gamers, revenue/spending, and other metrics are broken down into three main branches — mobile, PCs, and home game consoles — and examined from different perspectives. Revenue forecasts in four geographic regions are included for each of the three technical branches of gaming.

The deck is a primer for topics examined in more depth in separate IDC studies (that are identified in the slides). Key themes addressed are why certain market segments are growing faster than others and where market vendors should invest and disinvest moving forward. This MAP primarily focuses on game software/subscription spending and gamer dynamics rather than offering a deep comparison of the hardware used to play games.
