IDC MaturityScape Benchmark: Print and Document Management 3.0 in the United States, 2021

Allison Fantony
Robert Palmer

This IDC study presents the results of IDC's Print and Document Management MaturityScape Benchmark Survey and should be viewed as a supplement to IDC MaturityScape: Print and Document Management 3.0 (IDC #US46265520, May 2020). Together, the two studies describe the IDC MaturityScape for print and document management framework for executive leadership and IT, operations, and procurement managers to identify the stages, critical measures, outcomes, and actions required for organizations to evaluate and evolve their print and document management competency and strategy. This study also provides guidance for organizations of all sizes interested in advancing along the five maturity stages of the framework to maximize benefits derived from PDM.

Print and document management refers to policies, processes, and technologies that govern the print and document ecosystem — including creation and capture, workflow and management, and production and delivery — of both print and electronic documents. A print and document management initiative may be internal or outsourced to a third-party managed print and document services provider. In either case, the organization must have clear objectives and a strategy to attain optimal benefits.

"The office environment is evolving, particularly with an increased shift to remote working due to COVID-19. As a result, businesses are tasked with prioritizing digital transformation and security of sensitive information to ensure business continuity. Leveraging technology that furthers organizations on the print and document management maturity path will optimize document-intensive workflows while increasing document security and overall corporate governance and compliance, which is essential to remain competitive in an increasingly digital world." — Allison Correia, research manager, Imaging, Printing, and Document Solutions
