This IDC Survey summarizes findings from the 3Q19 U.S. Gamer Survey as it relates to likely PC/Mac sales in the United States during the 2019 holiday shopping season. The demographics of likely buyers are considered, as are hardware-related rationales, gaming-related buying factors, and brand perception across Acer, Apple, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo in particular. Systems that are self-built from components are considered in less detail. Gaming-branded systems such as Alienware, OMEN, ROG, and Predator are distinguished from the mainstream finished systems from Apple, Dell, HP, and so forth. The differences between all PC gamers that were looking to buy a new PC (or self-build one) in 4Q19 are contrasted with the subset of likely buyers who were also eSports fans.
"eSports fans were clearly an important element of the new PC system purchaser mix in the United States late last year. These buyers tended to be a little younger and skewed more male relative to the typical PC gamer that considered a new system purchase in late 2019, and although the buying rationales varied by brand/OEM, it's clear that eSports fans generally preferred pricier branded gaming rigs and were more concerned with visual quality than the retail price." — Lewis Ward, IDC's Research Director of Gaming and VR/AR
