Wearables to Make Slow Progress in the Enterprise in 2020

By: Ramon T. LlamasResearch Director, Mobile Devices and AR/VR

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight examines the expected usage of wearables within the enterprise for 2020. In late 2019, we surveyed 510 IT buyers on what benefits they received as a result of wearables distribution and their plans on distributing wearables in 2020.

"Usage of wearables within the enterprise is still relegated to a minority of the workforce, with 85.0% of our respondents saying that 1-25% of employees will use a wearable in 2020," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Wearables team. "While that speaks to the minority of employees, our survey data also shows that only 6.0% of respondents said that their companies are not distributing wearables to their workers at all. The balance of those respondents is in varying stages of deployment, with some even showing that all their employees are using wearables."

"IT managers should consider where they fall on this curve as they may be missing out on the benefits that wearables have to offer," continued Llamas. "As a result of deploying wearables, companies have experienced a net savings in terms of healthcare costs and an increase in productivity among smartwatch users. Given the low total cost of ownership and management, companies have less to lose and more to gain with wearables distributed among the workforce."
