This IDC survey brings a consumer, demand-side perspective to what happened in the U.S. consumer PC segment in 2Q20. "COVID-19 had a big impact on the timing of PC purchases, pulling ahead demand, particularly for those buying a notebook or convertible PC," said David Myhrer, research VP, Consumer Strategies. "Replacement of old or outdated devices and the need for additional devices for personal use, school, and work at home were key factors for being in the market. Due to the longer and longer replacement rates we had seen over the past few years, when the pandemic hit, consumers found themselves in need of newer, better-performing devices."
The survey was conducted from April to June 2020 (during the COVID-19 pandemic) among 486 consumers who purchased a PC in the past 30 days. This survey tells us what consumers did and why they did it, the impact of COVID-19 on purchase timing, and each brand's performance.
