Abstract

This IDC study examines key developments from early 5G commercial launches and announced 2020 deployment plans from U.S. mobile network operators and forecasts expected mobile 5G service adoption trends among both U.S. consumers and businesses. It also examines the evolving competitive landscape for 5G commercial service in the United States following the nearly complete merger between T-Mobile and Sprint and the increased availability of 5G-capable devices. Forecasts for 5G subscriptions cover total subscribers, as well as consumer and business segments, in addition to 5G IoT connections.

"2020 will be the year that 5G becomes 'real' in terms of coverage and services that begin to have an appreciable impact on the user experience for both consumers and businesses," says Jason Leigh, research manager for Mobility and 5G at IDC. "This year's commercial launches will go a long way in satisfying the excitement that has surrounded 5G for the past several years, but 5G's evolution is far from complete and its role in the connectivity landscape will continue to mature as the technical specifications and use case developments are further refined."
