Position and 3D Sensing Technologies for Augmented and Virtual Reality

Abstract

This IDC study assesses a range of sensor technologies used for position and movement tracking and 3D sensing for augmented and virtual reality head-mounted displays (HMDs). This study focuses on a range of position tracking methodologies, different types of image sensors, and emerging technologies such as radar and LiDAR to evaluate their possible future role in augmented reality and virtual reality head mounted displays.

"The market opportunity for sensor firms serving AR and VR HMDs is rich, given volumes equaling the automotive opportunity," according to Michael Palma, research director for IDC's Enabling Technologies and Semiconductors. "The near-term opportunity is to bring on ToF cameras, but beyond that, the options are opening up between radar, lasers, and other types of RF, in addition to sound and other optoelectronic sensing."
