U.S. Consumer Landline Voice Services Forecast, 2020–2024

By: Amy LindResearch Manager, Broadband, Enterprise Voice & IP Communications Services, and Unified Communications

Abstract

This IDC study forecasts the market for consumer wireline voice communications in the United States over a five-year period ending in 2024. This study provides subscriber and revenue forecasts for landline voice services. It also examines key trends impacting the consumer voice market including wireline displacement and disruptive VoIP services.

"The consumer landline voice services market is in decline as consumers continue to displace their home phone with mobile devices and VoIP services such as Skype and Ooma. The telcos have witnessed the lion's share of landline voice losses, but cable operators are no longer immune to the displacement trend, with the top 3 operators posting a loss of more than 1.5 million landlines in the past three years. Yet IDC forecasts that nearly 53 million U.S. consumers had a landline home phone at the end of 2019, suggesting that many consumers still value their home phone service." — Amy Lind, research manager, Consumer Multiplay and Broadband Services
