U.S. Smart Speaker Market Shares, 2019: Amazon and Google Continue to Dominate, But Third-Party Speakers Gain Traction

By: Adam WrightSenior Research Analyst, Internet of Things: Consumer

Abstract

This IDC study discusses the U.S. smart speaker market shares for 2019.

"The smart speaker market continues to advance at a rapid pace in terms of both the number and types of products entering the market and the rising levels of consumer awareness and adoption of these devices," says Adam Wright, senior research analyst, IDC's Smart Home research program. "Although Amazon has held a commanding lead in terms of market penetration for some time, as a first mover in the market, Google is continuing to make noticeable strides in closing the gap. Taken together, in 2019, Amazon and Google accounted for 80% of the total market in terms of shipments — down from 82.8% in the previous year, illustrating that third-party speaker makers are gaining traction in the market. That being said, at the platform level, Amazon Alexa still holds the lead with a market share of 49.5% across all first- and third-party speakers compared with Google's 42.0%, and 7.1% share for multi-assistant speakers with Alexa/Google Assistant built-in. As more consumers become aware of smart assistant–embedded speakers, competition for the top spot will be fierce — especially since the smart speaker is emerging as the central gateway for consumers to interact with their broader ecosystem of smart home devices and services."
