Abstract

This IDC Survey discusses the impact of COVID-19 on the secure remote access market. COVID-19 has been the topic of interest for 2020, as an unprecedented global pandemic has rapidly spread through the globe, claiming lives, damaging businesses, and changing the work dynamic for many people. Beginning in late 2019, COVID-19 has quickly spread and forced many locations around the world into a universal lockdown/quarantine to contain the impact of the virus. While essential businesses (hospitals, grocery stores, supply chain/shipping, and warehouses, etc.) have remained open, most others have been forced to close their on-premises locations. This has forced a significant change in how business is conducted, which will have a profound impact on technology spending in the immediate future and beyond.

In March, IDC completed the first in a series of technology spending/budget surveys to catalogue the changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. While spanning many different technology markets, this analysis focuses on the data collected around secure remote access and security. Given the new work-from-home mandate for many businesses across the globe, secure remote access is expected to be an essential security technology in enabling the rapid growth of the mobile workforce. In addition, budget expectations for secure remote access are expected to evolve as the Covid-19 pandemic continues.
