Abstract

This IDC Market Glance examines the consumer digital life protection market. Differences between physical and digital societies have contributed to the creation of the consumer digital life protection market. In a physical society, governmental and community-sponsored entities and the rule of law help protect citizens from risks to health, personal property, and human rights. In a digital society, similar "for the good of society" protections do not exist or are immature in terms of laws, enforcements, and penalties. Yet, for nearly 60% of the world's population (source: Internet Usage Statistics), they are digital citizens and are subject to the digital-equivalent risks in a physical society. Digital citizens have three options: accept the risks and potential consequences, retreat from the digital society to avoid risk (an increasingly impractical and improbable option), or purchase products designed to protect their digital lives by mitigating the risks and consequences.

Consumer digital life protection products are categorized into seven market segments based on the object being protected: endpoint security, connected home security, parental controls, password management, file backup, identity protection, and consumer VPN.
