2020 IT Training Buyer Survey Spotlight: Impact of Skills Gap and the Need for Strategic IT Skills Development

By: Cushing AndersonProgram Vice President, IT Education and Certification

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight illustrates the impact lack of skills can have on organizations by reporting the share of organizations that have experienced negative consequences from a lack of IT skills. It includes brief recommendations regarding how to create a "strategic skills development plan" for IT workers. There is no "typical" IT position or skill profile. With the increasing importance of IT to business success, it is increasingly important that IT professionals have the skills to perform their roles. Even with the reduced economic activity from the global pandemic, the IT skills gap will impact business resilience and business success.

"By 2022, the financial impact of the IT skills gap will grow to $775 billion worldwide, from $302 billion in 2019, as a result of delayed release of products/service, missed revenue, or increased cost. IT organizations must have robust strategic skills development plans in place for all critical IT roles." — Cushing Anderson, IT Education and Certification research
