Abstract

This IDC study provides an overview of the edge infrastructure software market. Much of the conversation around edge thus far has been around hardware. The fact of the matter is that hardware requires infrastructure software such as operating systems to operate. However, this software can be open source and self-built and have a much higher degree of customization than what is typically found in the datacenter. And yet IDC believes that commercial infrastructure software will play an increasingly dominant role at the edge given that hardware assets need to be deployed at scale and, therefore, the software stack that runs on them must have a level of maturity and proven operational resilience.

"IDC projects massive growth in data generated, transmitted, and stored at the edge," said Ashish Nadkarni, group vice president, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies. "Infrastructure software will play an increasingly important role in ensuring seamless deployment and operations at the edge."
