Worldwide Traditional PC Market Shares, 1Q20: Market Declines 8.5%, Marking Lowest Shipment Volume Recorded by IDC

By: Lauren GuenveurSenior Research Analyst, Devices

Abstract

In the United States, notebook declines had been anticipated due to large inventory pull in in the back half of 2020 to prepare for tariffs. However, with the outbreak of COVID-19, supply constraints led to deeper declines than expected, with the overall notebook market declining 9.1% versus what we had forecast at -2.3%.

This IDC study presents market share data for the worldwide traditional PC market for 1Q20.

"The first quarter of 2020 was a challenge to say the least," said Lauren Guenveur, senior research analyst, Devices, IDC. "While we had been expecting a lower first quarter compared with 2019, the outbreak of COVID-19 and subsequent shutdown of several Chinese cities severely affected the ability to manufacture and ship PCs. Although the supply chain has since recovered, we are not out of the woods yet as COVID-19, and its aftereffects, continues to affect demand across several markets."
