IDC Survey Spotlight: Requirement to Connect Sites to IaaS Clouds Drives WAN Modernization and Ecosystem Partnerships

By: Brad CasemoreResearch Vice President, Datacenter Networks

Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight explores the growing relevance of IaaS clouds to WAN connectivity and modernization initiatives. The document contains data from IDC's latest Worldwide Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN) Survey, conducted in November 2019. The purpose of the survey was to gain insights into the business and technical challenges, priorities, strategic objectives, and technology preferences of enterprises relating to their WAN and SD-WAN infrastructure. The worldwide survey solicited detailed replies from 1,223 respondents across a wide range of industries.

"The vast majority of respondents to IDC's latest Worldwide SD-WAN Survey indicated that they were using their WAN to connect sites to IaaS public clouds. As workloads continue to migrate to public clouds, the WAN must be modernized architecturally and operationally to support and deliver increasingly business-critical cloud applications to branches and other remote sites. Responding to enterprise demands for enhanced cloud application experience and simpler approaches to provisioning and managing networks that span hybrid and multicloud environments, SD-WAN vendors are likely to establish and deepen partnerships within an ecosystem that includes IaaS cloud providers, SD-Core vendors, and interconnection-oriented colocation providers." — Brad Casemore, research vice president, Datacenter Networks at IDC
