How the Use of Open Source Software Changed During the COVID-19 Pandemic

By: Al GillenGroup Vice President, Software Development and Open Source

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective takes a deeper look at the changing use of open source software during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Going into the pandemic, we theorized that the financial disruption caused by the pandemic would substantially benefit open source software, as has happened in past economic disruptions. Survey data recently collected covering the United States and China confirms this theory, and four respondents said they moderately or substantially increased their overall use of open source software for every one respondent who said they decreased their use of open source software," said Al Gillen, GVP, Software Development and Open Source, IDC. "The results of this survey confirm that open source software usage was boosted — and not negatively impacted — by the COVID-19 pandemic."
