By: Larry CarvalhoResearch Director, Platform as a Service, Frank Della RosaResearch Director, SaaS and Cloud Software, Al GillenGroup Vice President, Software Development and Open Source, Joe McKendrick
This IDC Market Perspective discusses dynamics of platform services from software-as-a-service (SaaS) vendors.
Variations in business demand bring the expectations of a high degree of flexibility and adaptability requirements from applications and development tools. Traditionally packaged software applications have been highly configurable, but without the flexibility required to adapt to processes popularized by digital platforms. SaaS platforms have enjoyed high adoption due to ease of use and, combined with the platform capability to extend the value to build business agility, give enterprises new tools to adapt to changing needs.
"PaaS is popular with enterprises looking to improve developer productivity powered by an abstracted infrastructure and automated developer life cycle," said Larry Carvalho, research director, Platform as a Service, IDC. "Allowing enterprise users of SaaS to develop unique and differentiating value on a platform with a common data, security and integration layer allows for accelerated innovation. At the same time, it provides SaaS vendors with new revenue streams."
