Thermal Imaging and Disease Detection: A Rapidly Evolving Market, But Challenges Remain

By: Mike JudeResearch Director

Abstract

This IDC Market Note examines the thermal imaging camera market and provides guidance on the efficacy and use of such technology.

Thermal imaging is being adopted as a way to screen for disease from a distance. Largely as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, remote thermal imaging provides a way to screen for viral carriers before they can contaminate facilities and public gathering places. However, thermal detection of body temperature is not foolproof and can generate many false positives and miss those may be infected but who don't show temperature abnormalities. IDC believes that the adoption of this technology will increase, however, but advises caution when doing so as well as ensuring that thermal imaging is deployed as a component of a much more comprehensive policy and screening program.
