Worldwide Automated Software Quality Forecast, 2020–2024: Software Quality Enables Digital Execution During Global Uncertainty for Growth Trajectory

By: Melinda-Carol BallouResearch Director, Agile ALM, Quality & Portfolio Strategies

Abstract

This IDC study provides an analysis of the 2020–2024 automated software quality market forecast. It discusses IDC's ASQ assessment for a market that showed single-digit growth of 6.1% to $3.0 billion in 2019 compared with growth of 5.7% to $2.8 billion in 2018. As organizations continued to reinvest in ASQ solutions to address increased complexity across a variety of vectors (including business, technology, software sourcing, and diverse platform deployment with mobile, social business, and cloud), most major share ASQ solution providers experienced some revenue increases, some in the high double digits. Others experienced lesser losses (largely because of evolving product releases, acquisition transition challenges, shifts to cloud delivery models, and some encroachment by open source tools). Midsize innovative vendors in emerging technology areas such as mobile, software quality analysis and measurement (SQAM), and cloud testing contributed to enable improved ASQ growth in 2019. We are beginning to observe the impact also of OSS usage and integration by vendors (such as Selenium and Cucumber, acquired by SmartBear in 2019). We also saw multiple acquisitions during 2019 and moving into 1H20, which enable opportunities for execution.

"We saw high investment in and demand for ASQ solutions and meaningful growth in 2019 that provides a foundation for adoption even during the current global pandemic, as organizations rely more than ever on quality software for digital execution; these factors underlie our ASQ forecast moving into 2024. Though our current ASQ CAGR at 3.3% for the forecast period is lower than last year's, we see the imperative for social distancing, along with increased complexity for remote multimodal application development and deployment and highly constrained, distributed staffing resources, resulting in ongoing demand for software quality automation," says Melinda Ballou, program director for IDC's Agile Application Life-Cycle Management, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies. "Responsiveness on the part of ASQ providers to customer needs for quality software will help sustain a return to growth, as vendors deliver more complete agile DevOps, quality and life-cycle management solutions via acquisitions and partnership, and as consolidation continues. Smaller vendors continue to play a crucial role for market innovation as we see from cloud testing, quality measurement with static and dynamic analyses and security leverage, and agile and mobile and ERP and business solutions, ML, AI, and RPA. We expect additional acquisitions and ASQ growth in this space in the 2021–2024 time frame."
