Kids' Connected Watches: A Wearable Whose Time Has Come in the United States

Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective analyzes the U.S. market for kids' connected watches. By definition, these watches are designed for children typically from 4 to 10 years and are connected directly to a cellular network with their own phone number. They appeal to parents since they offer connectivity and safety and add other features like messaging and fitness tracking to engage children. For the past several years, Verizon has been the sole carrier offering kids' connected watches, but recently Sprint and T-Mobile have begun including them as well.

"Kids' connected watches offer parents and their children connectivity and safety in an inexpensive package and similarly inexpensive service plan," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Wearables Team. "This makes purchasing such a device a low-risk investment while teaching the child the proper use of technology. For carriers, kids' connected watches represent an incremental revenue stream and deepen the relationship with the customer."
